To our clergy colleagues:
We in the Science and Spirit Resource Group, are mainly Anglican clergy
who
have worked as parish priests most of our lives, and we have always
been
emphasing life in Christ, as the Church understands this. First
things first. On
the other hand we are grateful that our church, in the
Lambeth Quadrilateral
states that in establishing the faith we should
also use our minds, our reason.
Nowhere are we encouraged to ignore the
use of science.
We would agree that as things are, it would be thoroughly inappropriate
to
include some of the material that you can read in this journal, as
part of church
worship. Nevertheless we would maintain that what
we publish helps us to
expand our understanding of Spirit, and helps us
to enlarge our understanding
of what Jesus meant when he spoke of the
Kingdom of Heaven.
To non-clergy and the general public:
In spite of what has just been said, the Group is trying to use the
tools of science
, and that of disciplined investigation. We must not
prescribe our conclusions,
or we will preclude our research. We hope
therefore that what is presented
here will be of interest to all,
regardless of religious beliefs.
More about the spiritual body
Readers
may like to look back at our last issue's article: “The
Spiritual Body”
where we gave evidence for the view that the spiritual body would
be as solid in
its own terms, as is our physical body. We accepted
that the universe is one
system, therefore physics should embrace
both the physical and the spiritual.
Now we
want to point out, that if there is a physics both of the spirit and
of the
material, then we will need to see Mind / Spirit as its basic
ingredient.
Here is
an incident that such a physics will need to address: Read
this article
where psychic
Lisa Williams seems to see into a journalist's immediate future.
Similarly, when there is a dream
that turns out to accurately predict the future,
ideas of ordinary
cause and effect will need to be dropped. A striking example
for me,
was when, after completing a telephone conversation with, shall we
say,
ten topics, I looked for emails on my computer. There I found an
email from a
friend in Sweden, who was describing a dream he had had
eleven days earlier.
All ten topics were in the dream. Such events
force us to re-think our ideas
about reality.
[John
S. Bell] CERN
physicist
John Bell's work helps suggest
where to look for such a more
comprehensive physics. His
Bell's
Theorem
relates to Quantum
Entanglement , where all energy particles of the
universe are understood as entangled with all others, so that in the
last resort, we cannot speak of causation involving local time and
space.
Psychic
research suggests that minds and spirits are similarly entangled. We
are reminded of Christian thought about The Body of Christ, or The
Communion
of Saints. And for us non-physicists it's helpful to hold
such pictures in our mind.
You will surely agree with me about that,
if you have just clicked on the previous
two links, which provide
bewilderingly complex information. On the other hand
if you can cope
with the complexities of physics, then you might like to look at the
Boundary
Institute site.
Leibniz
on Causation
“When the strings of Paco Peña's
guitar vibrate, Peña is not the real cause
of the vibration.
Nor are his fingers, wrist, and arm real causes. Is the vibration
then uncaused for the occasionalist? No, for there is God. God,
thought by many of Leibniz's contemporaries to be the only infinite
(i.e., divine) substance, is
considered to be the only real cause.
God causes the strings on Peña's guitar
to vibrate on the
occasion of Peña's volition—itself caused by God—to
strum
the strings on his guitar.”
Lent can be a time to hone our awareness of God
The Rev. Barbara Vincent, Dioc. Of Christchurch
NZ
[A great sermon, applicable after Lent too.]
At the beginning of this third
millenium we have an enormous amount of
knowledge about this
incredible world we live in, and we take as a matter of
course things
that once-upon-a-not-so long ago would have been regarded
as
miraculous – like travelling from one side of the world to the
other in person
in 24 hours, like sitting at home watching a rugby
game or a riot as it happens
thousands of miles away … We could go
on and on with incredible, miraculous
things but rarely, if ever,
would the word ‘God’ have been part of the verbal
scene. Read the sermon
Lisa
Williams in Christchurch: A surprise
Journalist
Vicki Anderson writes:
While I
wait to be connected to British Psychic Lisa Williams for our
interview,
I attempt to make my mind go still.
Unfortunately all I
can think of is the image of
Homer Simpson's brain – you know,
the
episode where he imagines a bear in a tiny car.
As the
phone rings, I really hope that Williams
can't read minds (“Dit,
dit, didda, dit, did a la,
la, la”) I'm talking to Williams
before her show at the Christchurch Town Hall
late last year. We
talk for some time about her career and how she discovered
her
psychic ability. Read

ASPSI On the Physical Basis of
ESP and Telepathy
by
David Brownstein
Abstract:
Up to now discussion and testing of Extrasensory Perception
have
been centered on human
experience.
However
there has been no
examination of the physical conditions
independent
of
human beings,
without which, ESP would not be possible as a human
faculty. This
article will attempt to 'put the horse before the
cart' by explaining the
structure
that
allows the transmission of something
from

to
humans. It is also the intention of this article to show how Feeling
Telepathy
is
independent of both Thought

ASPSI The Probability Laws of
Parapsychology
by Robert G.
Howard, Ph.D.
Abstract:
J. B. Rhine and others asked, “What would lead to general
scientific
attention to parapsychology?” This article and
previous articles have defined the
c general theory in their answer,
“A general theory that would harmonize psi
ommunication with
the known energetic system of the universe.” Rhine was
one of
the first researchers to use probability mathematics to gain
scientific
attention to parapsychology. This article suggests many
more tools in the
mathematics of probabilities. Three hypotheses are
proposed to connect the
physical part of parapsychology to the
psychical part through probability
mathematics. Read
Is
There Such a Thing as Life After Death?
By Laura
Fitzpatrick
TIME
Friday January 22,
2010
Is
there life after death?
Theologians can debate
all they want, but
radiation oncologist Dr. Jeffrey
Long says if you look at
the
scientific evidence,
the answer is unequivocally yes. Drawing on a
decade's worth of research
on near-death experiences — work
that includes cataloguing the stories
of some 1,600 people who have
gone through them — he makes the case
for that controversial
conclusion in a new book, Evidence
of the Afterlife.

Karen Armstrong, The Case
for God
Knopf, New York, 2009, 406 pp., hc
$27.95 (with glossary, bibliography, refs.)Reviewed by Sjoerd L. Bonting
The first
line in the Introduction reads: “We are talking far too much
about God these days, and what we say is often facile.” And then
follow 405 pages about God, but it is a pleasure to read what she has
to say. Her clear style of writing makes even complex matters easily
understood. Yet, she displays a remarkable breadth of knowledge and
understanding of every subject she writes about. Read the rest of the review
Letters to the Editor
Author: George Moss on his new book:
‘THE CHRONICLES OF AERAH – MIND-LINK COMMUNICATIONS
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE’
Sixty years ago I was an inconsequential young
conscript posted to an army
training establishment. But there was one
high spot to this brief military sojourn -
giving a talk to an
open-minded Salvation Army group on the value of fossils
and how they
prove the Earth did not begin in 4004 BC. It was a brave stance
for a young school-leaver, at a time when adherence to a 4004 BC
creation
was still commonplace. It is now time for another brave stance
- looking
beyond Earth and traditional Earthly theology to the
much wider vista of
God's creation.
