More about the spiritual body

Readers may like to look back at our last issue's article: “The Spiritual Body”
where we gave evidence for the view that the spiritual body would be as solid in
its own terms, as is our physical body. We accepted that the universe is one
system, therefore physics should embrace both the physical and the spiritual.

Now we want to point out, that if there is a physics both of the spirit and of the
material, then we will need to see Mind / Spirit as its basic ingredient.

Here is an incident that such a physics will need to address: Read this article
where psychic Lisa Williams seems to see into a journalist's immediate future.
Similarly, when there is a dream that turns out to accurately predict the future,
ideas of ordinary cause and effect will need to be dropped. A striking example
for me, was when, after completing a telephone conversation with, shall we say,
ten topics, I looked for emails on my computer. There I found an email from a
friend in Sweden, who was describing a dream he had had eleven days earlier.
All ten topics were in the dream. Such events force us to re-think our ideas
about reality.

[John S. Bell] CERN physicist John Bell's work helps suggest
where to look for such a more comprehensive physics. His Bell's Theorem relates to Quantum Entanglement , where all energy particles of the universe are understood as entangled with all others, so that in the last resort, we cannot speak of causation involving local time and space.

 Psychic research suggests that minds and spirits are similarly entangled. We
are reminded of Christian thought about The Body of Christ, or The Communion
of Saints. And for us non-physicists it's helpful to hold such pictures in our mind.
You will surely agree with me about that, if you have just clicked on the previous
two links, which provide bewilderingly complex information. On the other hand
if you can cope with the complexities of physics, then you might like to look at the Boundary Institute site.

Leibniz on Causation

“When the strings of Paco Peña's guitar vibrate, Peña is not the real cause
of the vibration. Nor are his fingers, wrist, and arm real causes. Is the vibration
then uncaused for the occasionalist? No, for there is God. God, thought by many of Leibniz's contemporaries to be the only infinite (i.e., divine) substance, is
considered to be the only real cause. God causes the strings on Peña's guitar
to vibrate on the occasion of Peña's volition—itself caused by God—to strum
the strings on his guitar.”

Lent can be a time to hone our awareness of God

At the beginning of this third millenium we have an enormous amount of
knowledge about this incredible world we live in, and we take as a matter of
course things that once-upon-a-not-so long ago would have been regarded
as miraculous – like travelling from one side of the world to the other in person
in 24 hours, like sitting at home watching a rugby game or a riot as it happens
thousands of miles away … We could go on and on with incredible, miraculous
things but rarely, if ever, would the word ‘God’ have been part of the verbal

Sixty years ago I was an inconsequential young conscript posted to an army
training establishment. But there was one high spot to this brief military sojourn -
giving a talk to an open-minded Salvation Army group on the value of fossils
and how they prove the Earth did not begin in 4004 BC.  It was a brave stance
for a young school-leaver, at a time when adherence to a 4004 BC creation
was still commonplace. It is now time for another brave stance - looking
beyond  Earth and traditional Earthly theology to the much wider vista of
God's creation.
